Hy-Vee and Schnucks are both recalling multiple products because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Hy-Vee is recalling plain whipped cream cheese, plain cream cheese and cookies & cream mix "out of an abundance of caution," according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The affected products are manufactured at different third-party facilities around the Midwest and are sold under Hy-Vee's private label and bulk packaging programs, according to the notice. The manufacturers of these products notified Hy-Vee of the potential issue and the company voluntarily recalled the products.
"There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of any of these products," the FDA said in its notice.
Schnucks is also recalling three of its cheese spreads for possible salmonella contamination, the company said on its website.
The affected products include Schnucks whip cream spread, strawberry spread and cream cheese spread.

No other varieties of Hy-Vee cream cheese or bulk-packaged items are affected by this recall, the FDA said.

What is salmonella?
According to the FDA, salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, the FDA says you should contact your healthcare provider.
